I’m an artist living in Portland, Oregon. Currently, and quite often, I’m torn between plein air painting and printmaking.
Plein air painting, or painting on location, appeals to the deep sense of wonderment I feel when viewing the colors and light in the world. Hokey sounding, I know, but true…. I don’t paint from photos, although will sometimes paint from memory.
Printmaking is a different kind of journey. I usually visit a place filled with characters and stories. A mysterious place that shines light on my experiences being human (I suppose). My images all sprout from my etching needle. I love tapping into that mystery, and I enjoy the old school process of intaglio printmaking.
To add to the confusion (and wonderment) I’ve lately (2009) been drawn to layering color with multi-plate etchings in a more abstract/formal/conceptually driven way. While it means I’m not an easy artist to categorize, I simply must listen and follow artistic impulses, even if it means I’m left with a body of work that develops along many dimensions.
Welcome to my blog. I hope to meet you at a show one day. See more on my website.
